Abstract

IN 1938 a review of conical diffuser performance by Patterson (Ref. 1) was published in this journal, and a reappraisal by Cockrell and Markland (Ref. 2) was given in 1963. The two articles are widely referred to for design purposes, although other reviews have appeared more recently (by Reneau et al (Ref. 3) in 1964, and Cockrell and King (Ref. 4) in 1967). Cockrell and Markland also included some preliminary results from an investigation which they instigated at Nottingham University, and it is the continuation of this work which is the subject of this paper.

Abstract

A QUARTER of a century ago, in September 1938, this journal published a review of diffuser behaviour by G. N. Patterson1 which, together with one of. its main information sources by Gibson,2 has formed the accepted guide to diffuser design. Patterson's paper was broad in scope and made clear reference to the effect of parameters which were not fully investigated until much later. It is the purpose of this paper to review experimental work, much of it being along the lines formulated by Patterson, and to indicate the improved analytical understanding of diffusers.

OVER A QUARTER of a century ago, in September 1938, we published a review of diffuser behaviour by G. N. Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this review paper is to outline the parachute materials and its behavior. To enhance parachute life, it is highly desirable to consider the commercial angle for any parachute manufacturing industry and its components under varying operational conditions. Hence, the knowledge of various textile materials and operational conditions which contributes the parachute strength and durability will be helpful for industries/researchers.

Design/methodology/approach

This section is not applicable for a review paper.

Findings

Parachute is a material used in numerous real-time applications such as man-drop, cargo delivery, aircraft recovery and aircraft decelerator which drastically reduces human efforts and time. However, each application requires a unique design and fabric selection to achieve the area of drag needed and the terminal velocity of the parachute material while in flight. For designing a man-drop parachute, the most critical parameters are weight and strength which must be considered during manufacturing. The army person uses the man-drop parachute, which must be as light as possible.

Originality/value

This paper is an original review work and will be helpful for parachute manufacturers/researchers to enhance the life of parachutes with improved functionality.
